Some of our customers got a very unusual surprise when they moored up their Norfolk Broads Direct holiday cruisers in the village of Stokesby, near Acle on Tuesday: a giant reedman being burnt at sunset to celebrate the Summer Solstice!
Each year a local artist from the Broadland village makes a 15ft figure from locally cut reeds and places him on parish land, by river. The village then gathers round at sunset and burns the reedman over a bonfire to commemorate the longest day, while enjoying drinks and a barbecue.
This series of five pictures – first showing the reed man by the river and then going up in flames – really looks quite atmospheric!
