We would like to inform customers and visitors that, moving forward, we will no longer be operating a bridge pilot service for all hire craft navigating through Wroxham Bridge to access the upper River Bure.

While this service will no longer be available for all hire craft, Norfolk Broads Direct customers will still have the option of a pilot to provide passage beyond the bridge free of charge when tidal conditions allow.

Additionally, we would like to assure visitors to the Broads that we are working closely with other hire craft operators to help facilitate access for their customers where possible.

Norfolk Broads Direct has been proud to provide this service for many years. However, due to changes in the holiday cruiser market and increasingly frequent high water levels making Wroxham Bridge impassable for many hire craft, it is no longer viable to operate the service in the same way.

We appreciate the understanding of our customers as we adapt to these evolving conditions and remain committed to setting the hire standard to ensure enjoyable and memorable boating holidays on the Norfolk Broads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has Wroxham Bridge become impassable more often?

Wroxham Bridge has become impassable more frequently due to rising water levels in the River Bure. The reason water levels increase or decrease over time is complex several factors contribute to the water level including weather patterns, tidal surges. For more information on the management of the Broads we recommend speaking to the Broads Authority and Environment Agency who are responsible for the management and maintenance of the waterways.

Why has the holiday cruiser market changed?

In recent years, the demand for larger cruisers has increased among holidaymakers. Many of these larger craft have higher air drafts, making them unable to pass under Wroxham Bridge. Simultaneously, the number of smaller cruisers—previously more likely to fit under the bridge, even in less favourable conditions—has declined. While we cannot speak for other operators, our customer feedback suggests that larger craft are preferred for the enhanced comfort they offer during a stay on the Broads.

Will there be a charge for the navigating Wroxham Bridge?

If you have booked a Norfolk Broads Direct holiday cruiser then the service will be provided free of charge. If you have booked with another operator you will need to contact them regarding if they will be providing the service and advise you if there will be any charges.
